LeagueNHL 27 Connected Franchise vs an Online League: Which to Play
Contents
NHL 27 Connected Franchise is back, and the first question most players ask is simple: should you run a franchise with your friends, or join an organized online league? The short answer is that they solve different problems. Connected Franchise is a GM game played with people you know. An online league is a competition against people you do not know yet. Below we break down how each one works, what goes wrong in practice, and how to pick the one that fits your evenings.
What NHL 27 Connected Franchise is
Connected Franchise, or CFM, is the online version of franchise mode. It returned in NHL 27 for the first time since the old GM Connected days of the PS3 and Xbox 360 era, and EA has said this first year is only the start for the mode.
Here is what EA has confirmed:
- League size from a small group of three friends up to a full 32-team league where every club has a human GM.
- Crossplay between PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with shared rosters for everyone in the league.
- A commissioner who creates the league, controls settings, approves trades and can step in when a game goes wrong.
- Custom settings for rosters, season length, playoff format, scoring rules, the salary cap and gameplay sliders.
- Free agency by bidding, where GMs place bids and rank their claims by priority, a bit like waiver claims in fantasy sports.
You play head-to-head games against other GMs, and if a scheduled game is available and both of you are ready, you can play it right away instead of waiting for the whole league to catch up.
Where Connected Franchise struggles
Reviewers and early leagues point to the same weak spots. Coverage from The Hockey News notes that in the first version, yearly stats, records, awards and player growth do not carry over from season to season, so every GM effectively starts fresh each year, which makes draft picks less meaningful. The mode has also been patched heavily, with a dedicated block of Connected Franchise fixes in the big updates so far.
The bigger problem is not the code, though. It is people.
The real issue with any league of friends
Every private league runs into the same wall sooner or later: someone stops showing up. A friend gets busy, another one switches games, and suddenly half the schedule is waiting on two people. The commissioner starts simming games, writing in forfeits and chasing everyone in group chat. By the trade deadline the league that started with ten GMs has four active ones.
None of this is a flaw in NHL 27. It is simply how small groups work. Connected Franchise gives the commissioner tools to keep things moving, like simming a game or entering a result by hand, but it cannot make people play.
How an organized online league works instead
An organized league flips the setup. Instead of a fixed group of friends, you have a large pool of players and a system that pairs you with whoever is ready. ICERANK is one example: a free online league for EA SPORTS NHL 27 on PS5, all 1v1 Online Versus, for players aged 18 and over.
The league runs three modes:
- [1v1 Ladder](/ladder): ranked games around the clock with any team in the game, an Elo rating and a monthly table that resets on the 1st.
- [Season](/season): 32 NHL clubs, each player owns one club for the whole season, 84 regular season games, then a 16-club playoff with best-of-seven series.
- [Cups](/cups): weekend knockout tournaments with brackets of up to 32 players, seeded by Elo.
Every game uses the same settings: Online Versus, 4-minute periods, Superstar difficulty, 3-on-3 overtime and then a shootout, so there are no ties. Season games also count toward the ladder, so one game works for two tables.
No commissioner needed
The jobs a CFM commissioner does by hand are built into the league. The winner reports the score with a screenshot of the final screen, the opponent confirms with one tap or opens a dispute, and if nobody responds within 24 hours the score is confirmed automatically. Disputes go to referees who check the screenshots. Fair play is tracked with a 0 to 100 rating, opponent reviews and penalties for no-shows.
No waiting on one missing friend
If one player disappears, the league does not stop. On the opponent search page you press "Find opponent" and get paired with someone near your Elo, or you challenge a player who is online right now. To keep the table fair, you can play the same opponent at most 2 times a day and 6 times a month.
Connected Franchise vs online league: side by side
What you control. In CFM you are the GM: trades, the salary cap, free agent bids, custom rosters and sliders. In a league you control your play on the ice, and your rating is the result.
Who you play. CFM means the same friends all season. A league means new opponents with new styles every night, matched to your level.
Platforms. CFM has crossplay between PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. ICERANK is PS5 only.
Organization. CFM depends on a commissioner and on everyone staying active. A league handles scheduling, score reporting and disputes for you.
Stakes. In CFM the stakes are bragging rights in your group. In a league you climb a public table, and ICERANK also pays cash prizes. The monthly ladder pays 24,300 RUB for 1st, 16,200 RUB for 2nd, 8,100 RUB for 3rd and 8,100 RUB for the most active player. To be honest about this up front: the community is mostly from Russia and other CIS countries, peak hours follow Moscow evenings, and prizes are paid in Russian rubles by Russian bank card or fast payment system. If you live elsewhere, treat the league first as a place to find serious, reliable opponents.
Which one should you pick?
Pick Connected Franchise if
- You have a steady group of friends who will actually play a full season.
- You enjoy the GM side: building a roster, working trades and bidding on free agents.
- Your group is split between PlayStation and Xbox.
- You want your own house rules, sliders and roster edits.
Pick an online league if
- Your friends play at different times, or not at all.
- You care more about winning games than managing a cap sheet.
- You want a rating that shows where you stand against a wider pool of players.
- You do not want anyone in your group to spend their evenings being the commissioner.
Or do both
There is no rule against it. Plenty of players run a franchise with friends on weekends and play ranked games during the week. If your group is on PS5, you can all sign up for the league, challenge each other directly and have those games count in the same table.
Tips if you start your own franchise
- Start small. Six active GMs beat 32 GMs where half vanish by December.
- Agree on deadlines. Decide up front how long you have for each round of games before the commissioner sims it.
- Write down trade rules. The commissioner approves every deal, so settle what counts as an unfair trade before it happens.
- Screenshot your results. If a game disconnects, the commissioner can enter the score from the screenshot.
- Use one set of settings. A good standard is the one our league uses: 4-minute periods on Superstar.

FAQ
Is Connected Franchise in NHL 27 online?
Yes. Connected Franchise is the online version of franchise mode, and it returned in NHL 27 for the first time since the PS3 and Xbox 360 era. Leagues can have from three human GMs up to 32.
Does NHL 27 Connected Franchise have crossplay?
Yes. EA confirmed crossplay between PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S for Connected Franchise, with shared rosters for everyone in the league.
What is the difference between Connected Franchise and an online league?
Connected Franchise is a GM mode you run with a fixed group, where a commissioner handles settings and problems. An online league is a competition with a large player pool, automatic matchmaking by rating, score reporting and referees, so it keeps running even when some players are inactive.
What can I do if my franchise league keeps stalling?
Shrink the league to the players who are actually active, set clear deadlines for each round, and let the commissioner sim games that are not played on time. If you mainly want regular games against real opponents, a ranked 1v1 league is the easier option.
Can players outside Russia join ICERANK?
Yes. Anyone aged 18 and over with a PS5 and NHL 27 can sign up for free. Most of the community is from Russia and the CIS, and cash prizes are paid in Russian rubles.
