The best NHL 27 overtime and shootout tips come down to one idea: in 3v3 the player who keeps the puck longer wins, and in a shootout the player who stops repeating the same move wins. Close games between equal players end up in extra time all the time, so this is where a lot of ranked results are decided. Below is a practical guide for online versus: how to play 3v3, when to change, how to finish regulation, and how to score and save in the shootout.

Why overtime matters more than you think

In the ICERANK league every game is played with the same settings: online versus, 4-minute periods, Superstar difficulty, 3v3 overtime, then a shootout. There are no ties. That means any game between two players of similar strength has a real chance of going past regulation.

Extra time also changes what a game is worth on the 1v1 Ladder. Against an equal opponent a regulation win is +20 monthly points and a regulation loss is -20. If the game is decided in overtime or a shootout, the winner gets three quarters of the normal value (+15) and the loser drops only half (-10). The full math is in our guide to the Elo rating in NHL 27.

The takeaway for the end of the third period: a mistake in a tied game late in regulation costs twice as much as a loss in overtime. If the score is level with a minute to go and you are not sure about the chance, do not throw everyone forward. Getting to 3v3 is often the smarter play.

NHL 27 3v3 overtime tips: the puck is worth more than a shot

At 5v5, a shot from distance is a fine way to reset. At 3v3 it is often a gift. The goalie smothers it or kicks it wide, the other side picks up the rebound and suddenly it is three of them against your two.

So in overtime:

  • Do not shoot just to shoot. Shoot from the slot, after a cross-ice pass, or when the goalie is moving.
  • Keep the puck even when the attack stalls. While you have it, your opponent cannot score.
  • Going backwards is fine. A regroup is always better than a turnover.

The regroup

The most important overtime move is the regroup. You carry into the zone, the defense takes away every lane, and instead of forcing it you skate the puck back to the neutral zone or even your own end. Your teammates spread wide, the defenders have to chase, gaps open between them, and you get to pick when the next attack starts.

The triangle

A simple and reliable shape: two players attack, the third stays high near the blue line as a safety. When the puck is lost, you still have someone between the puck carrier and your net. If you send all three deep, every turnover becomes an odd-man rush the other way.

Line changes in 3v3

Players tire fast with this much ice, and a tired skater loses every race.

  • Change with the puck. The best moment is when you control it in your own end or the neutral zone. Carry it back, change two players, and let the third hold the puck until fresh legs arrive.
  • Never change while your opponent is attacking. Leaving the ice during their rush is how 2-on-1s happen.
  • Attack right after they change. While their fresh players are coming over the boards, there are holes.

Dumping the puck in just to change is expensive in 3v3 because you hand over possession. A regroup and change with the puck is usually the better trade.

Defending three on three

You cannot cover everything with three players, so pick what matters: the middle of the ice and the passing lane to the open man.

  • Stay between the puck and the net instead of lunging for poke checks. A missed poke in 3v3 means a breakaway.
  • Do not chase the puck carrier into the corner with two players. One pressures, the others protect the slot.
  • Be careful with big hits. A missed check takes you out of the play, and a penalty in overtime is close to a lost game.

NHL 27 shootout tips: how to score

Each shootout attempt is a pure one-on-one with the goalie. Goalies on Superstar read predictable approaches well, so variety is your best weapon.

Change your speed

The most common mistake is flying in at full speed every time. At top speed dekes get wide and the puck is easier to lose. Start slower and accelerate late, or build speed and then slow down before your move. A change of pace breaks the goalie's timing.

Change your angle

Coming straight down the middle lets the goalie stay square. A wide approach from one side forces him to move laterally, which can open the far side or the five-hole for a moment.

Have three or four options

  1. A quick wrist shot without a deke. Many online players expect a move and commit early. A shot in stride can be the most surprising option of all.
  2. Forehand to backhand. Show the shot on one side, pull it across, finish on the other.
  3. Wide approach, far-side shot. Skate toward the boards, let the goalie drift with you and shoot back across his movement.
  4. A fake shot. Sell the release, wait for the goalie to react and go around him.

One patch note worth knowing: in Update 3 (patch 1.005, released October 20, 2026), EA tuned goalies to give up fewer goals on stride dekes. If you had one go-to move that scored every time, test it again.

Shootout tips in goal

When you control the goalie, patience beats guessing.

  • Do not commit early. If you dive before the shooter shows his move, you are giving him an empty net.
  • Stay square and move with the puck. Mirror the shooter instead of trying to predict him.
  • Watch for patterns. Many players repeat the same approach. If the first two attempts were wide-right dekes, be ready for it on the third, but do not cheat too far.

The goalie ratings are also worth a look before the game: the netminder on your roster changes how aggressive you can be.
