GuidesNHL 27 Tips for Beginners: 12 Things to Fix First
Contents
The best NHL 27 tips for beginners are not secret dekes or glitch goals. They are a handful of basic habits that new players get wrong in almost every game: chasing the puck, spamming poke checks, shooting from bad angles and never practicing. Fix these twelve things in roughly this order and you will win more games against both the AI and real people, usually within a couple of weeks.
Everything about the game itself here is based on EA's official beginner advice and controls help. The rest comes from what we see every day in 1v1 matches in the ICERANK league.
Start offline: build the basics before you go online
1. Use Free Skate as your training room
Free Skate puts you one on one against a goalie with no opponents and no clock. EA recommends it for working on skating, puck control, shooting and passing, and it is the single most underrated mode in the game. Ten minutes there before an online session works like a warm-up: practice the same two or three moves from both sides of the ice until you can do them without looking at the controller.
2. Lower the difficulty, then climb
There is no shame in starting on Rookie. EA's own help suggests the Quick Settings option for players who are new to sports games, and points out that a lower difficulty makes the AI slower and calmer. Play Now against the AI, win comfortably, then raise the difficulty one step at a time. If you play Hockey Ultimate Team, Cup Chase against AI teams is a good place to do the same thing.
3. Turn on the On-Ice Trainer for a week
In the visual settings you can set the On-Ice Trainer to Light or Full. It shows recommended passes, shots and positioning cues while you play. Use it to learn where you should be, then switch it off once those reads become automatic.
4. Pick a camera that shows more ice
EA suggests the Overhead or Zone camera for better awareness. The exact camera is personal, but beginners who use a low, close camera tend to miss open teammates and back-door passes. If you cannot see the whole offensive zone, you cannot make good decisions in it.
Fix your offense: stop forcing it
5. Pass more than you skate
New players carry the puck end to end and lose it at the blue line. Hockey is faster through the air than on skates. Make one or two simple passes on the breakout, and enter the zone with speed and support instead of trying to beat three players alone.
6. Use Vision Control, but do not live on it
Holding Vision Control turns your player to face the play, so you can pass or shoot without turning first. It is great for looking for a pass along the boards. In NHL 27, though, pivoting this way costs you a noticeable amount of speed, so do not hold it while you are trying to skate past someone.
7. Shoot from the slot, not from the corner
Most beginner shots come from bad angles: the half-wall, the corner, the point with no screen. Goalies in NHL 27 handle those easily. Work the puck toward the slot, move it side to side to make the goalie travel, and shoot when he is moving. A one-timer after a cross-ice pass beats a wrist shot from the boards nine times out of ten. For goalie-specific reads, see our guide to the best goalies in NHL 27.
8. Learn two dekes, not twenty
You do not need a highlight reel. Pick two moves you can do reliably in Free Skate, one to get around a defender and one in close on the goalie, and use them only when they make sense. Defenders who see the same deke every rush will read it, so mix in a simple shot or pass.
Fix your defense: stop chasing the puck
9. Stay between the puck and your net
This is the most important tip in the whole list. Beginners chase the puck carrier around the zone and leave the slot empty. Instead, skate backward, keep your defender between the attacker and the net, and let him come to you. Most goals against beginners come from the slot, not from the boards.
10. Stop spamming poke check
Every missed poke check is a lunge, and while you are lunging the attacker skates past. Use the poke check only when the puck is clearly exposed, and use stick and body positioning to take away the passing lane the rest of the time. Hits work the same way: a big hit that misses takes your player out of the play.
11. Choose a team that fits how you play
In online versus, everyone plays with real NHL rosters, so the team you pick matters. Fast forwards help on the rush, big defenders help in your own zone, and an elite goalie hides a lot of mistakes. Compare rosters on our best NHL 27 teams page and look up individual players in the NHL 27 ratings database. There is also an English guide on the best teams for online versus.
Fix your habits: how you actually improve
12. Play real people regularly and review your losses
The AI teaches you controls. Real opponents teach you hockey. The fastest way to improve is to play people around your level on a regular schedule, and after a loss ask one question: how did most of their goals happen? Usually it is the same pattern two or three times. Fix that one thing in Free Skate or in your next game, and move on to the next.
Where to find opponents at your level
Random matchmaking is a lottery: one game you face a total beginner, the next a player who has been grinding since launch. That is why many players move to a league once they know the basics.
ICERANK is a free online NHL 27 league on PS5. The community is mostly from Russia and nearby countries, but the site has an English version and anyone 18+ can join. There are three modes:
- the 1v1 ladder, with Elo-based matchmaking and a monthly table that resets on the 1st;
- the season, where every player runs one NHL club for 84 regular-season games and a 16-team playoff;
- weekend knockout cups, including level-based cups for newer players with Elo under 1000.
Every league game uses the same settings: online versus, 4-minute periods, Superstar difficulty, 3v3 overtime and then a shootout, no ties. The opponent finder matches you by Elo or lets you challenge a specific player who is online right now. Monthly ladder prizes exist, but be aware they are paid in Russian rubles to Russian payment methods, so for most international players the league is about competition, not cash.
